Lately

Things have been puttering along at their usual pace. Monday night I had to go and work for a couple hours as someone had to do something somewhere. Whatever. Chris is as nutty as me so it was a good couple of hours.

I managed to find torrents of all 21 episodes of Tintin. I am excited! I also found the Asterix movie Lise wants, so I'm downloading that as well. Both should be done by week's end, I think.

Found out that I got an A on the seds lab exam. Hooray! Apparently I had a couple minor cockups that bumped me down from a A+, damn. On Tuesday from about 5 til 1am I was working on my glacial presentation, with breaks for food and House.

Today was the now usual chilling time after structures class with Lise. She opted out of her class today and asked me to entertain her for the next hour as well. I had to put some finishing touches on the glacial presentation but I did provide some entertainment. During fluids today Katy brought her computer and speakers to show the class a video and while she was lecturing she tripped on a cord and the whole thing went crashing to the floor! She opened up the Powerbook and it worked fine! Note: Macs can take a beating. Went to the bonus, final seds lab afterwards. It was pretty easy as I had been doing the same idea for glacial labs all term. This was followed by the glacial presentations. Everyone did pretty good. Holly said I was the most natural up there giving my presentation, which made me pretty proud of myself. A lot of people are afraid of public speaking but I don't find it too bad. Might've had something to do with the fact that I'm actually interested in what I was presenting...

I actually have Friday off this week. Makes me want to do something. Don't have the money to go do anything, really, but if I could manage it so that I get to hang around with a certain someone, all would be good......

Hoorah

Saturday Nathan and Jason were up to visit. We went to a few shops, ate at DQ (seems to be a tradition now). After they left it was back home and getting ready for the formal. In an effort to look supernice I shaved with my usual electric razor then used a Mach III to get a closer shave. This ended in disaster, with several nasty cuts all over my face. I covered them up with Polysporin so I didn't look too bad. I must say I did end up looking pretty dapper. Went to the wine and cheese, the first one there. Was a little awkard as there wasn't too many people there that I knew too well. Then I headed down to the Beaverbrook hotel for the formal. Met Kim when I got there, she informed me that Lise was too sick to come, which was a major disappointment. We sat at a table with Mark and Melissa and it ended up only being the four of us for the evening; we were just too good for everyone else, hehe. The slideshow after the meal was very entertaining and many burns were handed out (Lise was burned and she wasn't even there). Afterwards things kinda died down for us; no one really seemed interested in socializing with us and Mark and Melissa left to go to the Social Club. We stayed just long enough to see Lentz dancing which was pretty damned funny. A couple of snowball fights with Kim and many random photos were taken.

Today was a lazy day. I caught up on most of my backlog of shows to watch; still have two episodes of Supernatural. Worked 3:13-9. Discovered it only takes 30 minutes to walk to and from work, which is a very good thing.

HCIF

Another week draws to a close. I can't say that I'm too fussy about this weeklong lab thing in igmetpet every week, plus essays, plus presentations, plus assignments in other classes... On the one hand I can't wait for this term to be over as there will be no more igmetpet. On the other hand, once this term is over I won't have any classes with The Ladies and that makes me very sad.

Last night was an average night, I guess. Pretty slow. Had a helper until 12, she did a lot. There was a weird incident with a couple of dudes that were in and ate getting inquisitioned by the police outside the store, but otherwise it was pretty boring as usual. Back to the grind again tonight.

And finally, still chipper. Its nice, but kind of odd for me...

The joker's getting wild, baby..

Today was a good day. Classes went well, weren't boring. Seds lab exam, but it was actually a very good and fair test. I was quite surprised. Very confident I did well. During the lab exam it started snowing. I don't know why, but this year I'm actually in good cheer for the season. Must be the company I've been keeping...

This evening was the last glacial lecture. We had our last test last week, so the lecture today was filler. We had a guest lecturer, Toon Pronk (think tone), who does surficial geology for DNR. It was pretty interesting. I wouldn't mind doing quaternary geology again for a summer job, but unfortunately DNR doesn't pay as much as I could stand to make elsewhere. We'll have to see what job prospects are like.

My feet, my feet, my feet are on fire...

Any notions I had about walking home after working 8+ hours have now been decimated. After working 11 hours tonight I walked down to Tim's (which was closed, damnit) and my feet just about said "Fuck this" and detached from my body. I managed to walk back to the store and sit on a garbage can and wait for a cab.

While sitting there, an HVAC unit on a nearby building shut off and the parking lot got quiet. Then at 0415 the lights all shut off and it was eerie and dark. Got a nice view of the sky. Not as nice as back home away from city lights, but it was pretty decent.

Argh and such

Today started off well enough. Got to uni and tried to find someone who could help me with the glacial lab, no dice. So I kinda stared at it a bit and didn't accomplish much. The Ladies arrived and all was well. Chatted for an hour as we always do on Tues and Thurs. Justin popped in the room and helped me figure out the glacial lab, which was helpful. Seds class was boring, as usual. Managed to stay pretty much awake (it helps that I have to write 3 pages of notes each lecture). Then it was lunch in the Bailey room, finishing up the lab, and listening to Wayne talk about his active neighbour. Igmetpet lecture was okay, nodded off a lot, which was no fault of Cliff's. Just was kinda sleepy today I guess. Went down for glacial lab at 3 and then things started going sideways. Couldn't really figure out the lab and I got a bit frustrated. I finally managed to figure it all out at the end of the lab but by then I had missed my regular bus so I was upset about the shitty bus service in Fredericton and how I have to rely on it to get home, plus I was frustrated about not being able to understand the lab on material that I'm contemplating following a career in. and everything was generally kinda shitty.

After the lab I checked my phone as I had a message, and it was Beth. Beth was my first manager back at my old Subway and she's now the district supervisor for a bunch of stores. She wished me well, etc etc. It was good to hear from her again. Cheered me up a bit. Got home, cooked some supper which wasn't so great. Called Nathan, talked for a bit. Called Curtis, talked for a bit. Watched House. Called dad, talked for a bit. Called Matt to remind him about the camera. Then I looked outside and its snowing. bleh!

Action hero

You scored as Maximus. After his family was murdered by the evil emperor Commodus, the great Roman general Maximus went into hiding to avoid Commodus's assassins. He became a gladiator, hoping to dominate the colosseum in order to one day get the chance of killing Commodus. Maximus is valiant, courageous, and dedicated. He wants nothing more than the chance to avenge his family, but his temper often gets the better of him.

Work...

So after 6 hours of training I'm now 'certified' to be a sandwich artist again. Today I called up Scott, the manager at the store I'm working at. He gave me a couple of shifts to work until the next schedule (he though I was still going to be at the other store for a bit). So here it is:

Saturday: 0700-1430
Sunday: 0700-1430

Bleh. Although I can open, I don't really like to. Cause I have to get up so early! Bleh. Plus it means I'll have to take a cab 3 times in 2 days. I'm sure its not very expensive to get from home to work, but still. Once the money gets flowing I'm really going to have to get my truck up here.

EDIT: And so of course about 45 minutes after I called Scott he calls me back wanting to know if I can come into work immediately and work til 7. So I did. He paid for my cab in and Helen picked me up. Woo. Got to work with two cute chicks, too.

Productive weekend, of sorts

Saturday I went up to the mall to buy pants for work and I lucked out and bought a new long-sleeve t-shirt for $9 (out of the 7 shirts I now have, 4 are blue - gotta even it out). I also lucked out and caught a ride downtown with Paul & Tara, saving me a bus trip. I went to Thomas Hobbies (sidebar: the owner of Thomas Hobbies is Rob Thomas - I kid you not) and bought gloss and flat black paint, glue and a new hobby knife. On the way up to the mall I chatted with Warna until she got off at the geo building to work on her thesis. After buying the clothes at Wally World I went over to Chapters as I had time to kill before the next bus. I leafed through Collins' Atlas of World History; its really interesting. I might buy it someday. On the bus ride back (had to take 13N again cause 11N wasn't running) I chatted with Tara (another Tara...) about miscellaneous things.

Once home I completed Project GTO/442, which turned out rather well. A lot of the 442 parts were able to be used on the GTO. I then began to think about what model to move onto next. I've been wanting to do a 4x4 car for a while now. I built one once back in grade 8 but that was during a dark time in my modelling hobby when everything was painted with a brush and hot glue was the greatest thing ever (yeah, I know, dark times indeed). I got to thinking about what to do when I remembered the leftover Explorer parts from Project Ranger Limited. The only Ford car I had here in Fredericton was a 1940 sedan delivery. I did some examing and coincidentally, a 1997 Explorer Limited and a 1940 sedan deliver have the same wheelbase......you know where this is going. I had to trim the Explorer frame and the sedan delivery body a bit, but I got it all to fit smoothly. So the end result is a 97 Explorer with a 40 sedan delivery body. It looks pretty sharp, and it ended up being a bit bigger than the Ranger. Pics will be linked when I get the GES camera back.

With these two new models finished, I realized that I have a serious lack of space for displaying models in this room. Its a tiny little room and just about all shelf space that I currently have is in use. I moved the PS2 to the side of the TV, standing it on edge. I put the Ranger Limited, the 4x4 sedan delivery and the El Camino on top of the VCR and the GTO is sitting on my monitor. I'm going to see if Helen will let me put a shelf up on the wall somewhere....

CSI gets geology wrong

With all the other science they chronicle on the show, I kinda expected them to treat geology good, but no. Hodges rattled of a bunch of minerals (was half listening at the time, I think it was quartz, feldspar, pyroxene and a couple others) and Catherine says "umm...diorite granite?" Um, no. Even if Catherine was some super hardcore petrologist that doesn't need a QAPF or other diagram to classify rocks (without percentage abundances even), diorite granite isn't even a rock! Diorite, yes. Granite, yes. Granodiorite, yes. But not diorite granite. Silly.

EDIT: Okay after some quick googling I guess there is such a thing as a diorite granite. But without knowing the abundance of the minerals you'd never be able to identify it without looking at it.

Employed

So today I went in for an interview at the Subway on Main Street. It wasn't so much an interview as it was the manager talking with me to find out when I can start. We worked out my availability and uniforms. Training is all done at the Prospect Street store and he said the length of my training period depends on how much I remember from my two year stint at WWP. I'm pretty confident that I'll be able to get back in the groove pretty quickly. And if the money flows quickly enough and enough of it is flowing I may just have my truck up here by Christmas. Here's hoping!
