I really need to start building these things....
Homey home home
This morning I got to play with the rock saw some more. Cut a bunch of samples for Jim. Then I added the samples to his little spreadsheet of samples. Then I had to do some more database stuff for John. Then it was a buffet at Pizza Delight as a little going away party for John as he's going to the Grand Canyon and then driving his Harley gack to Bathurst next month. Some of us might not see him again. Then it was off to the bus station and the drive home.
The bus ride home was mostly uneventful. Read a bit, slept a bit. Once we got to Fredericton and I ran into Tara, who was there for the day and was taking the same bus back to Saint John. So we sat together and talked the whole way back to Welsford. Things are looking up for this fall and I think I've made a bunch of new friends. :D
Tomorrow is the Grand Roadtrip to PEI that has been in the works for a couple of years now. I'm pumped! We're leaving tomorrow morning and coming back sometime on Sunday.
Career path
Once again I'm not entirely sure which direction I want to take towards a career path. I'm pretty set on building things, but I don't know if I want to build hydrological stuff or transportation stuff. I rearranged my schedule a bit to throw in some transportation stuff. I ended up adding another course to this term coming up, giving me 6 courses. I haven't taken 6 courses since first year, but I somehow managed to scrape by. The sixth course I added is called The Engineering Profession. It doesn't seem like it would be too difficult of a course, and its a new version of the course due to changes to the engineering curriculum, so hopefully it'll be in flux and they'll take it easy on us test subjects. Of course, that's what everyone probably thought about the APSC courses and those turned out to be brutal....

The Portrait of the Crafter Artisan (iStP)
The Crafter Artisans are not only concrete in speech and utilitarian in getting things done, they are also directive and attentive in their social roles. Though directive like their Promoter counterparts, their directiveness is leavened by a good deal of attentiveness and seclusiveness. They do not approach strangers readily, but once in contact do not hesitate to tell them what to do. And they can be quite forceful in this, such that others tend to do their bidding.
Like the other Artisans, Crafters live a life of artful action, but their particular nature is most easily seen in their mastery of tools of any and all kinds, from microscopic drill to supersonic jet, from potter's wheel to grand piano, from a camera to a clarinet. Sometimes Crafters will use their body as a tool. A tool is any implement that extends or varies our human powers -- vehicles, musical instruments, cutting devices, and weapons are just four of the many categories of the tools that surround us. Most of us use tools in some capacity, of course, but Crafters (only ten per cent of the general population) are the true virtuosos of tool work, with a natural ability to command tools, to bend them to their wishes, and to become adept at all the crafts requiring tool skills. Even from an early age Crafters are drawn to tools as to a magnet; tools fall into their hands demanding use, and they must manipulate them. Indeed, if a given tool, whether scalpel or earthmover, is operated with a precision that defies belief, that operator is likely an Crafter.
From this webpage after taking this test. Neat stuff.
Daily walk begins
After going clothes shopping and discovering that I can't even fit into 40" pants anymore I decided to start walking. I'm going to try and walk everyday. The route I've picked is down Riverside out to St. Peter, across the St. Peter bridge/causeway until Main, down the Main/Queen bridge/causeway back to Riverside. I'm told the circuit is about 2km, and it took me about half an hour to walk it once. I figure two times around to start out with should be good. Once I get used to walking every day I'll start going around three times, maybe.
Rules
Having gotten fed up with roomie B's attitude towards violating my room and using my computer, I have posted rules for computer access on my door. If the rules are violated, I'll cut off access to this computer altogether. Yes, its that annoying.
Mmm...donair...
I tossed in a donair kit with the groceries this week. I also got an extra bottle of sauce and some tortilla wraps. The first donair I made with all the kit ingredients wasn't that great, so the next one I made with the bottled sauce and the wraps was quite good. I must search SuperStore next grocery run for just donair meat. I seem to be starting a donair kick. That and grilled cheese sandwiches. Mmmm....grilled cheese...
Your daily scheduled update
Blah. Always coming up with a new title for each post sometimes gets troublesome for me... I'm not
that creative!
Today was another day out at Madran. Although we worked in the main building for the most part as the core Jim was looking at is brand new (drilled in 04) and is still inside. The day went pretty smoothly, not much happened. I managed to kill two bugs, though, which is always a good thing. When we got back to the office I had two things in the mail! Two CDs from a guy I know from a messageboard and another eBay purchase: a diecast 1979 Ford F150. I bought it on a whim last week, not really paying attention to the description. I thought it was a plastic model, so I was quite excited. But it turned out to be a diecast replica thing. Its not really that bad. Although I suspect the scale is smaller than 1/24, even smaller than 1/25. Probably 1/26 or something.
On the CD's from Jason Abbaddon was scans of Jackill's Starfleet Reference Manuals. My collection of fandom Trek books is almost complete! I just need to get Ships of the Starfleet volume 2 by Todd Guenther.
To the dump to the dump to the dump dump dump...
Well, today was cleanup day at DNR. Well, not really the whole office. It was just Mike, John and I cleaning out the garage. Andy helped a bit too as we loaded a bunch of stuff on his truck. I made two trips out to the landfill today and man does that place ever reek. For the second trip I made a side-trip out to Danny's cottage and loaded up the shingles and shit from his roofing job. Less hassle for when dad and I get the Ranger from there. Another plus to today was that I scored a spare tire and rim for dad's Chevy as the one that came with it is rusting apart.
In other news, dad sold the Ford. I'm going to miss that truck. But dad now has $5500 that he can use for things, which is great when you're on fixed income.
"Hello, my name is Chris and I'm an idiot"
Remember last week I mentioned having to cut rock samples? Well, when I cut them I never paid any attention to sample numbers or anything. Today Reg was at the office and checked out the rocks I cut for him, and informed me of my error. So I had to go out to the garage and sort through 3 boxes of cut rock samples, trying to piece halves together. Jim helped me for some of them and I managed to get the majority of the cut pieces put back together with their mates, labelled and bagged. Next time I'll pay more attention to what I'm doing.
My body hates me
It seems as though my body hates me and is trying everything it can to cause me discomfort. First there's the spur that's growing on my left ankle. Then there's the concrete rash on my right ankle that won't stop stinging. And now my left hand is swollen and paining a bit, most likely the result of an insect bite. What next?
Thank you mom!
Was talking to my mom and she went yard sale-ing today. She bought my a bunch of models for $10! Most of them are still in plastic! Woohoo!
Car shows and movies and barbecues, oh my!
Today a block of Main Street was closed off for a sidewalk party that included a car show. I went and checked it out and took a bunch of pictures. There were some really nice cars there, including a rare 1970 Corvette LT-1 (only one left in the maritimes). The owner took a picture of me sitting behind the wheel! I filled up 2 disposible cameras and I didn't even get a picture of all the cars!
We went to a matinee of The Wedding Crashers. It was a pretty funny movie, your typical putting-on-an-act-falling-in-love-getting-found-out-get-the-girl-anyways kinda movie. It even had Christopher Walken! But unfortunately there were no classic Walken moments. I would reccommend a viewing, but if you only see a couple movies a year don't bother. There are plenty other more worthy movies out (Batman Begins! Fantastic Four! etc).
Tonight we had a barbecue and somehow I got drafted to be the cook. I think I've cooked on a barbecue maybe twice before. But whatever.
On the topic of cooking, I have a few things to say. I enjoy cooking. I enjoy preparing food in general, really. I like baking things and cooking meals for other people and what not. However, if I'm just cooking for myself I don't really like to put that much effort into it. Most of the time when I'm preparing myself something I'm hungry when I start and therefore want to get the food cooked quickly and eat it, thus I tend to cook things like sidekicks and KD and pizza pops and what not, which doesn't help reduce the size of the keg, y'know what I mean? Spending an hour preparing a meal in which you're the only one eating it doesn't exactly seem to be the best in time management to me. However, if I could find some dishes to make that are quick and better for me than the usual, I'd go for it. I might look into buying lots of canned potatoes....
And finally, I have another rant about a roomie. Roomie B is really starting to bug me. She still doesn't turn the shower off when she's done. She's still stinking up the kitchen with her cigarette butts. She gets me to turn the fan on over the stove extra high when I'm cooking sausage rounds because she doesn't like the smell. Excuse me but she cooks things that smell so bad I can't leave my room without gagging a bit. Also, she seems to be under the impression that my computer is free for her to use whenever she feels like it. Yes, I have stated that her and roomie A can use my computer. But if I'm in the apartment,
ask me. I'll be sitting on the couch and she'll waltz in without asking, use my computer, sign me out of Messenger, move the window around, etc. I enjoy my privacy and my space and I like things to be arranged a certain way on my computer. When people just move things around and invade my space without asking it bugs me. I never go into her room for anything but if I did I would certainly ask. Roomie A at least still has the decency to ask me to use my computer and say "thank you" when she's done. It doesn't take a lot of effort! I've lost count how many times this week I've walked into my room to find her sitting at my computer. Grrr...
And as a final final note, I've been contracted to clean out the 3 fleet vehicles the office has. Score extra hours!
TGIF
Ah, its finally Friday. Not that this week has been long and boring and stressful:
Monday: Add new entry's to Jim's reference list.xls, alphabetize the paper copies in the filing cabinet.
Tuesday: Alphabetize filing cabinet.
Wednesday: Cut rock samples in the am, cut drill cores in the pm.
Thursday: Cut drill cores in the am, drill log data entry in the pm
Friday: Drill log data entry
Pretty much just busy work, what with Jim being on vacation and all. The week has been going by pretty fast, actually. But tonight is the start of season 9 of SG-1, season 2 of SG:A and BSG. Woohoo! Although seeing as where I don't get any channels that carry these shows, I'll most likely have to wait until sometime on Saturday to watch them once the torrents finish. Last night I watched both parts of "Moebius" to get caught up. I might watch both parts of "Siege" and "Kobol's Last Gleaming", I haven't decided yet.
I decided to join Nathan & Jason on the PEI camping trip. We've been trying to go on this trip for the past 3 years but this seems to be the first time we've been able to do it. I'm going to catch the bus home on the 29th, then we go to PEI on the morning of the 30th. Stay the night in PEI, come home on the 31st. I'll be home for my mom's birthday this year, which hasn't happened in a while. Sit back and enjoy the holiday on the 1st, then catch a ride up with my parents when they go camping on the 2nd or the 3rd, they're not sure when yet. I'll have to work mucho extra hours to cover lost time (1.5-2.5 days) but that shouldn't be too much trouble.
Unfortunately this trip means I'll be unable to go to TOTE the following weekend (unless someone wants to spot me $80 for a return bus ticket).
And as a final note, happy birthday Stephen!
I can see my house from here...hey ma! Get off the dang roof!
This is soooo cool.
Day of Tyr
So today I finished filing all of Jim's reference papers. Three drawers worth! Some letters had multiple folders for them so I had to sort out the big pile and then sort them into little piles. When I got to L, one author got his own folder! The man Sabine refers to as three full words: Dave. R. Lentz. Man he writes a lot of papers. Judging just by the volume of papers he's written alone he seems like one of those geologists that writes a paper at the drop of a hat about some minute difference. But I'm sure his papers are much more relevant than that. Sometimes I wonder if its a good thing or not that I don't have to take any of the courses he teaches...
And tonight was another installment of Tuesday Trivia at the marina. The questions this week were hard! We got like 5 wrong but we still managed to get second place! Woohoo! There was a draw for a 3.2 megapixel Kodak digicam tonight, too. I even bought a bottle of beer and choked down most of it so I could get a ballot but alas, I didn't win. Instead, the camera went to a guy at the table that placed first in the trivia (and they also got drawn for a pair of flip-flops; they hauled in tonight!) Oh well. Can't win everything, I guess.
Archive
I just now noticed that my archive was broken. I have now fixed it, so you can now read all my posts.
Also, whoever thought it would be a good idea to have an extremely loud, house-shaking clap of thunder at 6:42 this morning should be drug out into the street and shot.
That is all.
Sunday bloody Sunday
Today has been fairly uneventful. Went to see Fantastic Four this afternoon all by my lonesome as Sabine was on a field trip and Monique and Ylang went to some strongman competition or something. I must say, these comic book movies just keep getting better and better. Well, within a company, anyways. Fantastic Four is the latest Marvel movie, which is just about on par with Spider-man 2. I loved Stan Lee's cameo; he actually got to speak! But in comparison with DC's latest, I'd have to say I like the Batman reboot just a bit more. With more Spider-man movies in the future, and probably more Fantastic Four movies, I wonder if they'll do a crossover movie...
Always check pockets. Always!
Today I went out to Wal-Mart (quoth Ylang: There's a Wal-Mart here?!) and bought some clothes. Not much, just a t-shirt, a pair of pants, a long-sleeve shirt, socks and undergarments. Then swung by the apartment, grabbed my laundry and scooted out to Beresford to do laundry (stopped at Place Bathurst Mall to buy some magazines on the way). Stuffed my clothes into two washers and away they went. When they were done I popped them into high capacity dryers to see if it would take less time. All throughout this I never thought to check my pockets. I'm usually quite thorough in emptying my pockets out when I put things in my hamper. When I hauled my darks out of the dryer I noticed every single article of clothing had red spots all over it.
I had left a lumber crayon in one of my pockets. I think only one t-shirt and my new army pants survived unscathed. My old green cargos got hit the worst; I think the crayon was in them. So now 60% of my wardrobe is pretty much useless. I'm going to swing by the dry cleaner's tomorrow to see if they can get the wax out, but it seems unlikely.
After the laundry fiasco I headed out to Danny and Joanne's cottage again. Spent the rest of the afternoon and the evening there, watching TV and what not. Helped Danny with the cottage repairwork. Puttered with the Ranger a bit again. I got to looking at the registration and noticed that it has the truck listed as having an I4. This struck me as odd because it actually has a carbed V6. So I copied down the VIN and checked it out online. Turns out the truck originally had an I4! The 2.8 V6 was dropped in sometime later in its life (given that its an 83, its been around for a while). But the 2.8's journey is not complete; it will be swapped into my Ranger someday. I might get the VIN off the block sometime and see what it was originally in. The engine only came in Rangers and Bronco II's, though. Also, when I'm swapping it in I think I'll try and find some 2.9 exhaust manifolds so that each cylinder has its own port rather than having the silly siamesed ports.
Hello! I know first aid, do you need help?
So today was day one of first aid training. Amazing that I've managed to make it this far without training. Apparently first aid training is mandatory for government employees. At the museum they said that technically I was supposed to be certified, but they weren't about to pay for a course so I got by without it. Pretty long day, but I learnt some interesting stuff and I'll hopefully be able to help someone if they're in a first-aid-required kinda situation. Day two tomorrow and then its done!
In other news, it looks like I won't be getting a Bronco II this summer. Dad thought the wiring harness in my Ranger was fried but he tinkered with it a bit, put a different battery in and it started right up. Also, my uncle Danny is giving us an 83 Ranger with a 2.8 V6 that has a good rad support, windshield and tailgate (not much else good on it) for free. Can't beat that price. So I'll more than likely have the Ranger for putting around Fredericton this coming year. Which isn't so bad, I suppose. Someday down the road we'll swap the V6 in place of my truck's I4, which will be much better. Next step after that is a 4WD swap! But that's really more work than its worth...
Tuesday Trivia
Today was another office day. The room I work in is now occupied by two of the other students and is now called the "student lounge". John, Jim and Larry were in the lounge today having a rather long and heated discussion regarding the drill hole database. At about midway through the discussion we departed to get groceries. They kept on discussing the matter for a while when we were gone, so I hear. As a result Cyndie and Monique have to do things a little differently, I guess. Hasn't effected my work any so I'm just continuing to plug away as I've been doing.
Tonight was another round of trivia at the marina. Our team was on the ball tonight, only 2 questions wrong. But yet we didn't even place! There was a 4-way tie for first place. I guess they all must have gotten every question right. Next week we'll win...

Weekend Update
I went home on the bus on Thursday. It was a 6 hour drive, but it wasn't too bad. I read
Forward the Foundation for most of the ride. Once home I just basically lazed around, and I convinced my parents to get
Ocean's Twelve on PPV; neither of them liked the movie unfortunately.
Friday was a party for some friends of the family, one of which graduated from high school, the other from university. I stayed there for a couple of hours, then it was off to see
War of the Worlds with Nathan. I rather enjoyed it.
Saturday was a haircut, a trip to Roy's Army Surplus (bought pants for Jim, pants for me, a bucket had and a big duffel bag) and a trip out to Quispamsis to fix my dad's truck (the F-150) which my brother is driving because his latest car blew up. We thought it was the starter, so a new starter was bought and brought with us. Get to the truck and its not the starter at all; it starts right up. But its smoking like crazy so we pop the hood and check it out. Then there's a loud SNAP! The serpentine belt snapped because the A/C compressor has seazed (Curtis reported earlier that the A/C in the truck had quit). Fortunately Canadian Tire was nearby so we went to buy a replacement belt. We needed to bypass the compressor, so we needed a belt shorter than the one that was on it. The first trip, all three of us went in. Came back, tried the belt and found it was too long. So dad goeas back in for another belt. About an hour later he comes back. Being a Saturday after a holiday the store is incredibly busy and understaffed. So we try the new belt: its too long. Curtis's turn this time, he goes over. Dad moves the truck closer to Canadian Tire. Eventually Curtis comes back with another belt; its too long. Now its my turn to wait in line. Dad moves the truck to the Canadian Tire parking lot. At this point I should mention that the truck is actually still drivable, but runs on Armstrong steering, the battery isn't getting charged and the fan doesn't run. So, I eventually come back with another belt; its too long. By this time we're ready to give up. Then we find out that the Carquest in East Saint John is open til 5. By now its 3:30 so we all hop in the car and head to Carquest. We get a belt and bring it back to Curtis's place to put it on the truck; its too
short. We have time enough for one more trip to Carquest before it closes so Curtis and I head back for a replacement. Bring it back and its also too short. By now Carquest is closed. So we gave up entirely and headed home, stopping at the Canadian Tire on the west side to get yet another belt that dad is confident will fit. Once we got home and ate supper we watched
In Good Company on PPV. It was a pretty good movie and my parents both liked it, too.
Today was the return trip to Bathurst. In addition to the new pants to bring with me I also brought a couple more models, two board games and my coin collection all packed into the duffel that I got at Roy's. The bus drive back was pretty much the same as the ride down, complete with a cute girl that was going back to Bathurst (she was on the same bus coming home). Once I got to Bathurst I was disappointed to see that none of my roomies were waiting to give me a ride back to the apartment. I called and there was no answer. So, I had to walk back to the apartment. Its not that long of a walk but I had 4 bags, one of which was rather heavy. So I loaded myself up and walked back. My hand still hurts from having the duffel's cord wrapped around it. Oh well.
